This one of a kind vase, sculpture, jardinière, is in the classic art nouveau style.
It is a highly expressive patented sculpture depicting the bust of a bearded man with a large hat, his flowing hair and beard morphing into the form of a nude female figure at the base. A subtle floral motif extends along the back, which features an integrated handle, as this sculpture also functions as a vase or vessel.
Signed Ferrand on the back and stamped "E. F. Pes" on the base.
Ernest Justin Ferrand was a French sculptor and decorative artist active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Associated with Art Nouveau and Symbolist movements , he is known for expressive bronzes that often blend human and natural forms in allegorical or mythological compositions. Ferrand exhibited at the Paris Salons and created both fine sculpture and decorative objects, such as vases and figural busts. His works, often signed Ferrand, are valued for their flowing lines and emotive detail - hallmarks of the Belle Époque aesthetic.
Condition: general surface wear and oxidation consistent with age; structurally sound, two hairline cracks on the leg of the female figure
